Project Overview

The aim of the Higher Education Sprout Project (HESP) of Tunghai University is to cultivate talent in accordance with the University's strategic plan by way of using the following four strategies: enhanced liberal arts education, specialized programs for interdisciplinary studies, an innovative learning ecosystem, and social innovation praxis. HESP awakens students’ desire to learn and expand their global vision. With liberal arts education at its core, the project emphasizes language skills, general education, logic, computational thinking, and international exchange.HESP is an innovative project that, with a base of developing academic affairs, links existing student learning issues with future social and industrial needs. Beyond professional skills, we hope to nourish students’ general liberal arts education and interdisciplinary learning abilities, thus allowing students to have the skills to recognize, confront, and resolve key social issues of the future. The images below describe the pillars and core concepts of HESP.

Student learning is the primary focus of a school, and liberal arts education coursework is the cornerstone praxis for Tunghai University’s vision of a solid foundation in liberal education. Abundant options and diverse content of integrated courses have long been distinct features of the University. HESP corresponds with the University’s mid- to long-term academic development plan, with student learning as its guiding principle. Subproject 1 mainly expands upon “Strategy 1: Wide Professional Spectrum” and “Factor 1: Basics and Specializations,” valuing the development of student leadership qualities, converging basics and specializations, and combining interdisciplinary learning with critical thinking. Each student will be equipped with two languages (coding and foreign) and knowledge in three areas (liberal arts, interdisciplinary fields, and the digital world). Students will be able to broaden their global vision and move toward internationalism; and, they will understand as well as embody diverse cultures, thus becoming world-savvy representatives of Tunghai University.

Project Leader: Dr. Li-Chih Wang, Vice President

Tunghai University is a university that, firstly, cultivates student vision and character with a holistic education and, secondly, connects specializations with interdisciplines. During at least four years of a well-rounded education, students can experience balanced growth in knowledge and character, connecting them to the development of industrial and social movements. Through the five-year plan of HESP, we expect to gradually promote and establish problem-based Interdisciplinary Colleges of Innovation (including, but not limited to: College of Digital Cloud and Innovation, College of Senior Life and Technology, College of Environmental Sustainability and Governance, and College of Cultural Creativity and Industry). Problem-based Interdisciplinary Colleges of Innovation is the physical manifestation of the “New and Real” aspect of the University’s developmental vision. The subproject supports the cultivation of leadership talent with problem-solving skills, beginning from imminent and concrete issues of the future, using accumulated energy of the University as a foundation, with innovative planning and design.
