In order to implement the innovative concepts of The Higher Education Sprout Project such as improving teaching environment nd teaching quality, protecting students’ equal right to education, and promoting diverse development of higher education, the English Language Center has been designing four new modules for the Sophomore English for Non-Majors (SENM) program which includes Multiculturalism, Communication Skills, ESP/Workplace English, and English for Daily Use since April, 2018.
The first new module of courses on Communication Skills will be offered starting the fall semester of 2018. The module consists of two courses—Presentation Skills and Project-Based Learning. Students who register for this experimental course module will take one semester of Presentation Skills with an instructor and one semester of Project-Based Learning with a different instructor. The instructor of each course provides solid training in listening and speaking skills, using a variety of topics and multimedia sources that highlight different features of spoken English. In addition, through hands-on experience, students’ communication skills will be enhanced while actively engaging in targeted projects. With well-organized guidance and sufficient oral practice, it is hoped that SENM students are able to improve their oral presentation skills and develop confidence to express themselves through team work and solid partnership.
